The giant dome is just a single formation within the cavern--it's pretty cool, but doesn't really need a separate review from the caverns themselves. When you walk through the Big Room, you'll see it.

This is one of the most impressive formations in Carlsbad Cavern's Big Room. It's over 60 feet tall, about as tall as a six-story building. Looks more like a pillar than a dome. What's even more impressive than the size is the delicate formations on it. Looks like thousands of tiny trees grown in layers on top of each other. You can view it from a few angles along the trails of the Big Room. To photograph this formation use a tripod and long exposure setting. I use three to five second exposures. If it turns out too bright, decrease the time. Vise versa if it's too dim. Don't use flash if you are very close to it. It will be too bright. The long exposure should capture the details from the dimly lit formations.

It's amazing when I saw those giant stalagmites. It's hard to imagine that those stalagmites have grown for thousands of millions of years and are still growing.

The Giant Dome is an unique rock formation that is quite large. It is one of the Carlsbad Cavern's truly amazing formations. If I remember correctly it is located in the Big Room.

It's hard to really describe the Giant Dome; it's such a unique huge rock formation, one of the Carlsbad Cavern's truly remarkable sites. You simply have to see this to appreciate it.

A must see if you are traveling in New Mexico. We were touring the southwest when we decided to stop at the Carlsbad Caverns. It was so incredible that I can't describe how I felt but breathless. To us, it was better then the Grand Canyon.
