Large parts of the fortifications at the Rhine side were lost, including the city gate in the direction of Koblenz, namely the Koblenzer tor (will be rebuilt). The Viehtor, built between 1396-1418, is one of the three preserved gates, it lost its outer arch and Tower, however, remains of the staircase tower with spiral staircase serves today as a chapel cavity. It was (and still is) a passage to the Mühlental (Mill Valley). Before the Bramleystra?e was built livestock was driven through this gate, its name was derrived from this fact. A little known historical fact is that the rooms of this city gate, as well as the Scharfenturm, were used as a prison and interrogation cells during the witch hunt in Rhens.
